Their personal views don't fall into the work.

Writers' work is all personal. Their beliefs tend to seep into their work even when they don't want it to.

If it is beliefs I have trouble with, I stop reading that writer's fiction. After all, I read fiction for fun. Arguing with Orson Scott Card in my head isn't fun for me.Margaret Yanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06464624057491288244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056652857722842516.post-43769178171591686092012-09-15T17:34:23.652-07:002012-09-15T17:34:23.652-07:00There is nothing inherent in Art that requires a l...There is nothing inherent in Art that requires a level of wisdom or humanity in the artist. If one's art is masterful, it may be because that is the artist's redemptive moment and they were deeply in touch with the truth of themselves. Outside of that, I stay clear of the mundane and small-minded, and yearn to have coffee and a long chat with the rest.CLChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15285667433095434961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056652857722842516.post-54300435412508549782012-09-15T10:49:03.796-07:002012-09-15T10:49:03.796-07:00I find it interesting that both comments have ment...I find it interesting that both comments have mentioned Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise. But as for the content of an authors/artists or actors character, I like Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, and Liam Neeson, even though their views may differ greatly from mine. They are fine actors. I love many, many authors, am an Indie author and support other Indie authors despite any differences we may have and normally do not delve into their personal life or philosophy.
I would say that all art should stand on it's own merit not the merit/character of the artist.Carolynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12302801255687109631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4056652857722842516.post-46154957866432134812012-09-15T06:38:30.449-07:002012-09-15T06:38:30.449-07:00Interesting point, Michael. I rarely go looking for private life details of authors, composers, musicians or actors etc so I don't really know if the people whose art I appreciate have extreme views or not. I'd watch a film with Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise without a problem, even if I don't agree with their personal views. I read Enid Blyton with my kids but she wasn't the best parental role model by all accounts. Nevertheless, if an artist (using the term broadly) was promoting views or behaviour I personally abhorred then I might avoid their work.
Taking the point slightly differently (putting it on its head in fact) it can be a bit awkward when you like someone's personal character but don't like their art. In the world of indie authors we band together on facebook etc and give each other great support but sometimes, if we step across the line from fellow author to reader, we might not like what we see. That can be difficult.@Ruby_Barneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07136530922804444637noreply@blogger.com
